Dark Light

Today, let’s look at the newest tool scammers have begun to employ – AI.

AI Scammer

The sophistication of scammers has increased exponentially due to the ease of access and ability to use AI. Scam emails have become much less obvious. Previously, we could identify a scam email easily from errors with grammar or spelling. AI is incredibly more accurate.

Even scarier, AI can be trained quickly, with limited samples. It can be trained to be you.

In a recent Global News report, Michael Campbell received a call, answered some simple questions from what he thought was Amazon.

The scammers had used AI to train a voice model, and were able to accurately impersonate him, calling his bank, and make transactions.

The Canadian Anti Fraud Centre reports over $2B in losses due to scams since 2021, with $638M of that in 2024 alone. It is also estimated only 5 to 10% of people actually report the loss.

Be suspicious of phone calls that are unsolicited. Do not give out personal information. If you are unsure, hang up, and call the company directly ensuring you call the correct phone number.

Stay vigilant, stay safe.
